Exchanging EndNote files between Windows and MacOSEndNote filter files and EndNote connection files downloaded from an internet site (for example the UB site from the University of Maastricht) where they have and EndNote section and an importfilters section can couse some problems for Mac EndNote users. (btw. the EndNote site says: EndNote 4 Styles are not compatible with earlier versions of EndNote). The problem is that the (Classic) MacOS does not recognize these files on their filename extension. MacOS X does. The (Classic) MacOS simply uses another file identification system. Every Mac file has it's own Creator and Type attribute, both a 4-character (case sensitive !) code. For EndNote files the creator is always 'ENDN'. Now, when downloading, let's say, an EndNote filter file (with extension .enf) to your Mac, that file is complete. Only your MacOS doesn't know it is an EndNote filter file. After correctly changing the type and creator codes of this file, it will be recognized as such. Therefore I made a few small applications. One for every EndNote filetype:
So download:
Now you only have to put a converted EndNote filter file in the 'Filters' folder within the EndNote folder (on your local harddisk), and/or a converted EndNote connection file in the 'Connections' folder within the EndNote folder, etcetera. Do not mix different file types, each EndNote file type has it's 'own' folder within the Endnote folder. That's it. Mail me if you have any comments. EndNote 8EndNote 8 is released in december 2004 and runs only on MacOS 10 (X).We have used it, and it works fine with Office 2004. EndNote 8 uses a new file format (!). Files saved with EndNote 8 can not be read with earlier versions. EndNote 9 and XWe have used both versions, and both run fine with Office 2004. These versions use the same file format as version 8. Files saved with EndNote 8 and up can not be read with earlier versions. If you use version 8, delete it and use version 9 or X. EndNote 8 is a bit buggy, crashes frequently, while EndNote 9 and X are stable versions. EndNote X1When you would like to work with Office 2008 and install EndNote X1, remember that the X1 installer places the EndNote files needed to communicate Office and EndNote in the Office 2004 folder. EndNote has released a free X1 update to solve this problem.EndNote Support pageVisit EndNote Support page for the more news and reports of EndNote for MacOS |
