Install SPSS 17 for MacOS X (and how to update your license)
For users of MacOS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) use SPSS 18.
If you can not get a copy of SPSS 18, you can use one of the following solutions.

1) If you want to upgrade your Mac to MacOS 10.6 (Snow Leopard), make a backup of your hard disk and install SPSS 17, including the PASW 17.0.2 patch first, that means, before upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6.

When this it the case, read the story including the instructions given on this page.

Or, simpler, to replace line 5, place the java.zip file in '/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions' open the Terminal (in the Utilities folder) and type (press enter after each line):
cd /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions
sudo rm -f 1.5*
sudo unzip java.zip
sudo ln -s 1.5.0 1.5

After the first sudo command a password is asked, type your local root or administrator password here.

2) Make an image of the SPSSInc folder from Mac running SPSS 17 with MacOS 10.5 (via Disk Utility).
Move the disk image to the Mac running MacOS 10.6
Restore the image on the exact same location (in /Applications)
Update the license running the License Wizard.

System Requirements :

SPSS 17 is a Java application, so you need all the latest Java updates for MacOS X. Check if you need any system update(s) via Software Updates (Apple menu).

To install you must be connected to the internet. If your installation succeeded you can use SPSS 17 without an internet connection.

Download the SPSS 17 disk image (562 MB) (login using your UM account), open the disk image and doubleclick on 'SPSS Installer'.

This download shall not be released by students, anyhow not intended for use at home.

In normal English, this is only for UM employees, students should buy a copy of SPSS 17 via www.surfspot.nl. That copy includes an activation code.

First, you need to authenticate to the Mac you're going to use for the installation.

Choose the 'Site license' option.

We tried the Network licence option, but that didn't work.

Click 'Continue'.

Fill the fields, at the serial number field, you do not need to type the authorisation code here, but later on during the install.

Your system administator has the SPSS 17 (Mac) authorisation code, or can get it via ICTS.

Click 'Continue' (only once).

Be patient.

Now the actual installation of SPSS 17 will take place.

Be patient, the installer takes his time.

The PASW installation is indentical to the SPSS 16 installation. At the end, you need to license SPSS 17 (via internet) by typing the authorisation code.

SPSS was bought by IBM in july 2009, thereby changing the name SPSS to PASW (Predictive Analytics Software).

If the authorization succeeded, you can now use SPSS 17. At the moment of writing this, there are two patches for SPSS 17.
You can download and install them via (install these updates in the order given below) :
SPSS Statistics 17.0.1 Patch for Macintosh
PASW Statistics 17.0.2 Patch for Macintosh

Click here to check if there are other SPSS (PASW) 17 for Mac patches

If you ever need to uninstall SPSS 17, in /Applications/SPSSInc/Statistics17 there is a folder '_uninst', doubleclick 'uninstall.jar' to uninstall SPSS 17. Be patient, this takes some time. Read this blog for more details about uninstalling.

To update the SPSS license with the Authorisation code, go to /Applications/SPSSInc/Statistics17.

In that folder you see the 'PASW Statistics License Authorization Wizard'. Start the Wizard by doubleclicking his icon, and follow the intructions. Here you can type the Authorisation code in order to update your SPSS license. Be patient, the Wizard takes his time.
