UM Cisco VPN Client for MacOS X

The ICT Service Centre created a Cisco VPN Client for MacOS X

Follow the steps below to get this client to work. It's a great piece of software.

System Requirements
The VPN Client(s) for MacOS X you can download run on any Macintosh computer with MacOS X (from 10.2 to 10.6) and need about 30 MB of hard disk space.

First, make a choice for one of the clients available:

  • UM Cisco VPN client installer (v4.06) for MacOS 10.2 and up, including 10.4 (Tiger) download the disk image.
This version will run on MacOS 10.2 and up, including 10.4, but NOT on multiprocessor Mac's and NOT on Intel Mac's.

  • UM Cisco VPN client installer (v4.9) only for MacOS 10.4.x (Tiger) download the disk image .
This (Universal) version will run on MacOS 10.4.x and supports both PowerPC Mac's and Intel Mac's. This version will not run on MacOS 10.3.9 or lower, not on MacOS 10.5 (Leopard) and not on MacOS 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

  • UM Cisco VPN client installer (v4.9.01.0080) runs on MacOS 10.4.x (Tiger), MacOS 10.5 (Leopard) and MacOS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) download the disk image.
This version will NOT run on MacOS 10.3.9 or lower. This version is a Universal Application, meaning that it runs on both PowerPC Mac's and Intel Mac's.

When, after upgrading your MacOS from 10.5 (Leopard) to 10.6 (Snow Leopard), the (under MacOS 10.5 installed) VPN client won't startup when running MacOS 10.6, simply download this version (in 10.6), and install the VPN client again.

Login with your unimaas accountname and password.
Now, install the VPN Client from the diskimage on your desktop.
Do not move, drag, delete, change or rename anything (!), because this installation works with hardcoded and not relative paths. After the installation you find the 'VPNClient' in your Applications folder.
Before you startup the VPN client you need a connection to internet via cable, modem, wireless (AirPort) etc. There are a few restrictions in the use of this client.
  • When you start the client when connected to Maasnet the client will return an error, that's because this client is setup as a Access-VPN instead of a Security-VPN. So you cannot use it when having a 137.120.xxx.yyy ip address (but why should you ?).
  • When working with this client you can do everything towards the UM. To the rest of the world you can only use http and https.
Start the VPNClient by doubleclicking it's icon in the Applications folder.
Get connected. Click 'Connect'.
Use the same username/password combination you use when you login to your UM mailbox.
You'r connected ! Read the warning, so do not misuse this client.
Logout when you'r ready by clicking 'Disconnect'.
That's it.
